WILDLIFE ATTRACTION
Plant Colour

The white, scented flowers in late spring go on to produce red, berry-like fruits or haws that attract birds. Hawthorns are also characterised by their dense, thorny stems.

Also known as May or May-trees, Hawthorn is named after the month in which it blooms. The haws can also be made into jams, jellies and wines.

Hawthorn grows in all different types of soils but flowers and fruits best in full sun. Avoid waterlogged soils.

Hawthorns are recognised for their long season of interest and extreme hardiness. As a result, they are particularly beneficial for coastal or exposed gardens. It is certainly a popular choice in wildlife gardens too.
